Student Council
The role of the Student Council:
The main role of a student council as set out in the education Act 1998 is “ to promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school, in co-operation with the board of management, parents and teachers” some general objectives of a Student Council might include the following:
- To enhance communication between students, management, staff and parents.
- To promote an environment conducive to educational and personal development
- To promote friendship and respect amongst pupils
- To support the management and staff in the development of the school
- To represent the views of the students on matters of general concern to them
Students, through the Students Council, can work to help to make the environment for everybody associated with the school a better one. For instance you might help with activities such as extra-curricular events, charity events, school newsletters, links with other schools, mentoring programs, awards, carrying out surveys or helping organise fundraising events. You may also get the opportunity to acquire the sort of communication, planning and organisational skills which may be of benefit in your future life.
If you are interested in helping out then make sure you put yourself forward when the next round of elections for the new council take place in September.
